Plugs,valves,carbs and air cleaner should be addressed first.Disconnect the ground from the battery before removing the front engine cover,once it's off reconnect the ground.A dwell meter is still the best way.Remove the two screws that hold the cover of the can,check the foam gasket,a bad one will let water in during a thunderstorm in KY.Trust me,it's no fun.Remove the two screws that hold the bearing plate,pull it out and rotate the big circlip on the can to allow better access through the slots to the points once the plate is back in place as it holds the shaft on center.If there is a skweaking noise from it with the engine running it should be replaced.If you're using a feeler gauge,try pulling the can and do it on the bench,you have to loosen it anyhow to adjust the timing.You might still have to fine tune to synch the timing with the points.When checking the timing with a light,make sure the advance is working properly by revving the engine to 3500 RPM and watching the timing advance. Marks are not the same on all bikes,check your manual.Condenser change I've been told is optional,one of mine is 30yrs old.Don't forget to disconnect the ground before reinstalling the front engine cover,diode boards aren't cheap!Most of all do it like John Muir would advise in his VW's for idiots books,crank up the tunes,have a refreshment of your choice.It's supposed to be fun.

PS:Set point gap to spec,usually .018".Carry an emery board to clean them if they toast and a matchbook cover if you don't carry a feeler gauge. It's close enough in a pinch.

		+	I found many years ago that the points in my 1980 R65 were the same as in my aircooled (some things never change) VW at a fraction of the cost.Take the old ones with you as the stripes on the wire make a difference in resistance,I've been told.
